During Your Child's Appointment
As a new patient, your child will receive an exam and an overview of their dental history. This assessment includes looking for:
- Issues with primary teeth coming in
- Current teeth and mouth health and maintenance
- Review of hereditary oral problems, such as malformed or missing teeth
Your child should have an initial exam before their second birthday.
As children’s dentists, we also know the dental issues and habits to look for throughout a child’s early years. Our children’s dentistry checkups will develop with your child to include:
- Review of current condition each appointment
- Assessment of need for preventative supplements (fluoride, fissure sealants, etc.)
- Analysis of habits such as thumb-sucking
- Inspection of jaw and tooth growth
At each appointment, we will gently and carefully clean your child’s teeth and gums as a part of long-term preventative care. We will also discuss general children’s dentistry, including:
- Hygiene and brushing techniques
- Establishing oral healthcare practices from a young age
- Age-related development information
- Bite and nutritional advice
- Managing anxiety about seeing the dentist
Our number one goal is to help your child’s teeth develop to be healthy and beautiful. Our children’s dentist in Wollongong is a leader in the field, and we want to help you and your child maintain good oral hygiene.
Check Up Frequency
Primary teeth are prone to tooth decay. Permanent teeth depend on the health of the primary teeth, so good primary tooth health is essential for long-term oral health.
Regular oral hygiene cleanings will allow us to treat and maintain your children’s oral health. We recommend visiting our children’s dentists in Wollongong at least twice a year to help your child’s primary teeth stay healthy.
Why Children Need Specialised Care
Dental treatment for children differs from adult treatment in several ways. For one, braces may be necessary on incoming permanent teeth to ensure that they do not grow misaligned.
Our children’s dentist in Wollongong can provide fixed appliances to control thumb-sucking and space maintainers and jaw repositioning appliances.
